Protecting and enhancing Goytre Hall Wood
Situated between the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal and the A4042 near Penperlleni, Goytre Hall Wood is a restored ancient woodland that provides valuable habitat for wildlife and a peaceful place for people to enjoy nature. Covering around 3.5 hectares, the woodland supports birds, bats and ancient woodland plants, while its peaceful setting makes it a popular destination for walking, learning and relaxation.
Monmouthshire County Council is delivering a programme of improvements to protect and enhance the woodland for future generations, ensuring it remains a thriving habitat for wildlife and a welcoming green space for the local community.
Goytre Hall Wood is managed by MonLife, Monmouthshire County Council’s leisure, culture and countryside service, which cares for a range of green spaces, heritage sites and visitor destinations across the county.
Why is work needed?
Like many woodlands across Wales, Goytre Hall Wood faces a number of challenges. Tree diseases such as ash dieback, invasive species and changing environmental conditions can affect the health of the woodland and the wildlife it supports.
By carrying out targeted management and restoration work, we can improve the woodland’s resilience, increase biodiversity and help ensure it continues to flourish in the years ahead.
What are we doing?
The project will deliver a range of improvements, including:
- Managing the effects of ash dieback.
- Creating and enhancing woodland glades to benefit wildlife.
- Planting native trees and shrubs.
- Restoring sections of the woodland stream.
- Improving paths, seating and interpretation for visitors.
Goytre Hall Wood forms part of a wider network of woodlands and habitats across the landscape. Improving the condition and diversity of the woodland will create better habitats for wildlife and strengthen ecological connections between neighbouring sites.
The work will help create a healthier and more resilient woodland, supporting a wide range of species and contributing to nature recovery in Monmouthshire.
