Information for Teachers and Parents
Information for teachers
Our service is increasingly popular with a wide range of clients. During recent years, we have successfully designed outdoor education and outdoor development courses for clients ranging from special needs departments in primary schools to A Level students preparing for university and from unemployed youngsters to senior managers.
Why choose MonLife Outdoor Education centres?
We cater mainly for groups of young people and schoolchildren. Around 7,000 each year enjoy brilliant outdoor activities and experiences at our three centres in the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons area.
We are proud of our excellent safety record and we are regularly inspected by Health and Safety Executive, which oversees the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA). We are licensed in accordance with The Activity Centres (Young Persons’ Safety Act) 1995.
How we help teachers and group leaders
We are experts in tailoring courses to your group’s needs. We have designed courses for everyone from special needs departments to A Level students. We can be flexible on the duration of courses as well as the mix of activities. We can provide accommodation for groups who wish to organise and carry out their own programmes of work (e.g. school field trips). We are able to provide equipment and expertise to support environmental and field studies if you need it.
Centre staff will take responsibility for technical safety during daytime activities. Visiting staff maintain overall responsibility for the pastoral care of the group. We can discuss this with you when you’re making your booking. Programme details and responsibility for leading activities will be clearly defined before your visit. Our centres all hold Public Liability Insurance and the centres are not open to the public.
We recommend that members of your group take out appropriate Personal Accident Insurance to cover, for example, the loss of personal belongings.
Whichever centre you stay at there will be welcome talk given by centre staff followed by a fire drill. The welcome talk will remind young visitors about how they should behave to ensure their safety during their stay.
While we encourage children to push themselves, we always put safety first. In the unlikely event of an accident, procedures are in place to ensure that professional help is always available and that parents are kept fully informed.
All buildings and equipment are properly maintained and inspected. The buildings that make up MonLife Outdoor Centres are regularly inspected for fire, legionella and food safety standards. All equipment provided is safe, well maintained and appropriate for use.
We provide transport to and from activity sites – all vehicles are regularly maintained and inspected by Monmouthshire County Council. All vehicles are fitted with seat belts for all passengers.
The teaching staff at the MonLife Outdoor Centres are highly qualified and experienced practitioners of outdoor education. Only staff with nationally recognised qualifications will lead pursuits such as canoeing, rock climbing, mountaineering and caving. All teaching staff hold current First Aid qualifications.
Information for parents
We understand that for parents it can be a challenge to let your child go on an outdoor activities trip, maybe staying away from home for the first time. We are happy to talk through any concerns parents have about the activities they will be doing. Please get in touch with us initially using the contact form.
Our philosophy is about helping young people challenge themselves by taking managed risks in an outdoor environment. We offer an experience they can’t get in the classroom. There’s nothing like a difficult rock climb or thrilling abseil to boost your child’s confidence – they will return home glowing with pride! The value of such visits are well known and Adventure Activities are now part of the National Curriculum in Wales and England.
Parents can contact us for reassurance – on request we are happy to provide list of staff qualifications and experience. We are also happy for parents who may be concerned about safety to contact us using the contact form.
