SUMMARY:Art History Online - Facing the Past : The Art of Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Join MonLife Heritage Museums’ exciting new art history course. From van Eyck to van Dyck\, Raphael to Reynolds and Pissarro to Picasso\, explore how artists’ portrayal of their sitters reflected the art\, politics and religion of their era. \nCourse Length – 10 weeks of two hour morning lectures (one week off for half term)\nCourse Dates – Wednesday 2nd October – Wednesday 11th December (no class Wednesday 13th November)\nTime – 10:30am – 12:30pm\nMedium – Online via Zoom (with recordings available afterwards) Click here to book the in-person version of this course.\nCourse fee – £110 \n(Recordings available to members of this course\, so that any lectures missed can be caught within 4 weeks\, on Zoom) \nThis series of ten lectures takes us through the history of portraiture. From the time when it became popular in the 15th century\, portraiture began to emerge from providing a mere adjunct to religious paintings to become a means to demonstrate power and status. The desire to show individual character and bring sitters to life developed alongside the portrayal of a simple likeness\, until we reach the 19th century when style and exploration of new ways of painting meant the sitter’s identity became increasingly subordinate to the process of making art\, until we arrive at the challenge of Modernism. \n‘Facing the Past’ is also a chance to look into the eyes of people from other times – were they so different from us? \n\nTerms & Conditions\n\nBooking is only available online\, via this page. The booking must be made 24 hours before the first session starts. The booking covers all ten sessions. \nIf you sign up to the online course then you agree to use Zoom for these webinar talks. You do not need to download the Zoom app\, the link sent by the lecturer will take you to the Zoom website.

SUMMARY:Art History In Person - Facing the Past : The Art of Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Join MonLife Heritage Museums’ exciting new art history course. From van Eyck to van Dyck\, Raphael to Reynolds and Pissarro to Picasso\, explore how artists’ portrayal of their sitters reflected the art\, politics and religion of their era. \nCourse Length – 10 weeks of two hour afternoon lectures (one week off on Monday 11th November)\nCourse Dates – Monday 30th September – Monday 9th December (no class Monday 11th November)\nTime – 2:00pm – 4:00pm\nMedium – In person at the Drill Hall Chepstow (with the option to catch up on any missed session with recorded online lectures available for a limited period). Click here to book the online version of this course. \nCourse fee – £110 \n\n\n(Recordings of the online lecture course will be available to members of this course\, so that any lectures missed can be caught within 4 weeks\, on Zoom) \nThis series of ten lectures takes us through the history of portraiture. \n\nTerms & Conditions\nBooking is only available online\, via this page. The booking must be made 24 hours before the first session starts. The booking covers all ten sessions. \nBy signing up to this talk you agree that your email address can be passed on to the lecturer (Eleanor Bird) for contact and session-related reasons (eg. to send out relevant course details).

SUMMARY:Tom Parker Bowles talks to Matt Tebbutt about his new book 'Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III'
DESCRIPTION:Tom’s new book lifts the curtain on royal kitchens past and present. ‘As a food history geek\,’ he explains ‘I cannot tell you how exciting it has been to read original recipes in the royal archive in Windsor\, and disappear into the lives and reigns (and eating habits) of sovereigns from Queen Victoria onwards.’ The published recipes however\, he assures us\, are not ‘roast cygnets and ortolans’ but ‘proper recipes’ that he’s loved to cook. \n\nAlthough Tom is godson to the monarch and his mother\, Camilla\, is Queen\, he can expect no deference from Matt. Tom and Matt go back a long way\, to their co-hosting days on UKTV’s Market Kitchen.\n\nTom Parker Bowles is the restaurant critic for The Mail on Sunday and a contributing editor for Esquire\, Country Life and Conde Nast Traveller plus a regular judge on the BBC’s Masterchef. Matt Tebbutt presents Saturday Kitchen on BBC 1 and his new book Pub Food: 100 Favourites\, Old and New is just out.\n\nOur local award winning independent bookshop ‘Book-ish’ will be facilitating book signings after this event.\n\nAdmission and Book £35 (book retails at £30 so £7 discount)\n\nTom will be signing copies of his latest book ‘Cooking and the Crown: Royal recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III’ .\n\nYou can purchase copies here\, alongside your ticket. You will pick you book/s up on the day. Further copies will be available to purchase at the theatre..

SUMMARY:Jay Rayner talks to Tim Hayward about his new book 'Nights Out At Home: Recipes and Stories from 25 years as a Restaurant Critic'
DESCRIPTION:Jay’s first cookbook is inspired by the dishes that have stolen his heart over his long career as a restaurant critic; collected\, taken home and carefully reverse-engineered in his kitchen: where Jay is no slouch\, as he demonstrated when he destroyed the opposition to win MasterChef: Battle of the Critics 2023. \n\nNights Out at Home is not just a recipe book. Seasoned with anecdotes\, and told with Jay’s customary wit and warmth\, it’s also the story of his 25 years as a restaurant critic for The Observer; a story he shares here with fellow restaurant critic\, Tim Hayward.\n\nJay Rayner is an award-winning writer\, journalist and broadcaster. He has been the restaurant critic for The Observer since 1999 (garnering millions of views per year)\, and has presented the BBC Radio 4 show The Kitchen Cabinet for over a decade. In March 2023 he was named Critic of the Year in the UK Press Awards. Tim Hayward is the Fortnum & Mason 2024 Restaurant Writer of the Year. His latest book is Steak: The Whole Story.\n\nOur local award winning independent bookshop ‘Book-ish’ will be facilitating book signings after this event.\n\nAdmission and book £30 (bookretails at £22 so £4 discount)\n\nJay will be signing copies of his latest book ’Nights out at Home’\n\n\nYou can purchase copies here\, alongside your ticket. You will pick you book/s up on the day. Further copies will be available to purchase at the theatre.
